Is Watching Movies A Hobby Or Interest? (Explained With Benefits)

A hobby is simply defined as an activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure.

With that in mind, watching movies is certainly both a hobby and an interest. In fact, watching movies comes with quite a few benefits that you might not even be aware of.

Love watching movies? Then be sure to keep reading on as I talk about why we love watching movies so much and the positive influence that they can have on us.

Watching Movies Is A Hobby: 4 Great Benefits

is watching movies a hobby

Movies offer more than just a great way of passing the time. Here are four great reasons to keep enjoying the process of kicking back, relaxing, and watching a movie (especially if it’s with others).

1) Watching Movies Is Great For Date Night

I will be the first to admit that watching a movie with a special someone, is amongst one of the best date-nights that you can partake in. I say this from a lot of experience, too.

When I was a little younger, my two best go-to dates were:

  1. Mini-golfing as a date.
  2. Watching a movie together.

Heck, I still go have date nights with my girl when it comes to those two activities (because they are still a lot of fun).

The fact of the matter is that not only is watching movies a great hobby, but you even get a much better experience when you share it with someone else.

Movie nights are also great first-dates because it takes a lot of the pressure off of you. Most of your time will be spent watching the movie, but you’ll still be able to be close to each other.

2) Watching Movies Is An Inexpensive Hobby

There is a wide variety of ways that you can watch a movie, all of which are going to be relatively inexpensive.

I almost completely forgot to mention that this is a great thing when it comes to hobbies. After all, there are plenty of hobbies, activities, or even sports that cost a pretty penny to partake in.

Here’s a good idea of what you can expect to pay when it comes to watching movies:

  • Redbox rental is around $2.00
  • Cable TV (which is going to fluctuate).
  • Netflix pricing is as low as only $8.99 per month.
  • I would say that the average movie ticket is around $10 (depending on when you go).

Keep in mind that if you go to see a movie in the theater, you’re most likely going to get some food and refreshments as well. Unless you bring snacks to the theater with you 😛

Overall, getting some type of movie subscription is always going to be your best bet. Netflix is relatively cheap and there are plenty of other alternatives that are even cheaper.

Lastly, there is always the option of purchasing movies for a deep discount. If you’ve ever been flea-marketing or tag-sale shopping, then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Plus, you can always re-sell movies, which I talked about in the related article that I added below.

When it comes to garage sales and purchasing movies from others, I’ve seen prices such as:

  • Ten cents (usually if bought in bulk).
  • Twenty-five cents.
  • Fifty-cents.
  • One-dollar.

And many other prices that are extremely low, especially for being able to purchase movies. In many instances, buying movies can actually be much cheaper than renting them.

3) Watching Movies Offers A Wide Variety Of Emotions

I’ve personally seen thousands of movies throughout my lifetime, so it’s very easy to see that watching movies can provide you with a rollercoaster of emotions.

This is also true regardless of the genre that you’re watching. Heck, even watching cartoons as a hobby comes with a wide variety of emotions.

Even better, you can watch a movie based upon how you are feeling, or how you want to feel. I embedded a great clip up above from the movie Mallrats, where Stan Lee relates comics to love, as well as his life. As Jason Lee states:

So you created each character as a way to deal with your one big regret.

What Stan Lee ends up telling Jason Lee (no relation), ends up being a joke. However, there’s a whole lot of truth in regards to what he tells him.

Movies aren’t just created to bring out emotion, but they are also created to share stories and inspire people. They allow you to connect with characters, even if they aren’t real.

That’s yet another big benefit of watching movies, aside from the emotions, are the connections that you create with some of your favorite characters. And just because you can’t actually see these connections, doesn’t mean that they aren’t there.

4) Watching Movies Is Great For Bringing Family And Friends Together

So I’ve covered the aspect that watching movies is one of the best date-night activities that you can participate in. What’s also great about watching movies is that you can do it with friends and family.

I don’t know about you, but I have more memories than you can shake a stick at when it comes to watching movies with friends and families.

For me personally, I’ll never forget gathering around the television and watching movies that are forever timestamped in my head:

  • Shedding a tear when Apollo died in Rocky 4 (don’t act like you didn’t).
  • My dad spoiling The Sixth Sense and telling everyone Bruce Willis is dead (lol).
  • Repeat watching the original Indiana Jones movies (not so much the Crystal Skull).
  • I’ll never forget watching the original Scream when I was young and being scared stupid.

Ironically enough, Scream was one of the horror movies that didn’t get bad reviews. I’m not sure if you’ve ever noticed it, but critics seem to have an ax to grind when it comes to horror movies.

Anyways, I’m sure that you have plenty of fond memories as well. These are the types of memories that you can create when watching movies with friends and family, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

Can Watching Movies Be A Hobby In A Resume?

Absolutely! Watching movies can be added as a hobby to your resume. However, this isn’t going to be the best option when it comes to listing your favorite hobbies.

The reason for this is that employers usually want to see hobbies that showcase a wide variety of interests, skills, or characteristics. While I’m all about kicking back and relaxing to watch a movie, I wouldn’t put this on a resume (unless it was beneficial).

Speaking of being beneficial, this is something that you’d want to put on your resume if:

  • You wanted to become a movie review or critic.
  • You’re looking at working at a movie theater or in the movie industry.

And any other examples where the employer is going to want to know that you are pretty much obsessed with movies and watching them. Aside from that, it’s best to talk about other hobbies that are more creative and can showcase some type of critical thinking or desirable skills.

What Is The Hobby Of Watching Movies Called?

A person who has a big passion for cinema or anything movie-related is called a cinephile. Those who are cinephiles, also tend to see movies from a different lens (so to speak).

This is according to Wikipedia, which also uses the term movie buff (which is something that I personally characterize myself as).
